For more details on the problem covered in the video above and other types of cross-reference problems, see the article Cross-references – Troubleshooting.

You can learn more about cross-reference fields in the article How cross-reference fields in Word work at my wordaddins.com website.

Work more efficiently with cross-references in Word

Note that my Word add-in DocTools CrossReferenceManager can automatically prevent or fix the problem illustrated in the video above. The add-in has many powerful tools that can significantly speed up the work with cross-references.

The problem and solution shown in the video above apply to all versions of Word

The video was originally created using Microsoft Word 2003. However, the problem and solution is precisely the same in all newer versions of Word – but the user interface is different.

In Microsoft Word 2007 or later version, you can open the Bookmark dialog box via Insert tab > Links group > Bookmark. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+F5 to open the Bookmark dialog box.

Formatting marks can be toggled on and off in any version of Word using the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+8.
